They were found at the end of a road. The person who spotted them knew they needed help. When she pulled her car closer and got out, two of the puppies came up to the woman but the 3rd one, who was the largest in the group, appeared to have no energy and just laid in the grass.
At that point some of the nearby neighbors came out to see what was going on. One of them said she'd seen a white Dodge pickup truck stop earlier and throw out the three puppies, then take off.
Getting a better look at the trio, the first thing that was spotted was they were infested with fleas and ticks. The lethargic one, it turned out he had flystrike on his head and behind his ear and there was a mound of maggots festering in what appeared to be a head wound. He couldn't keep his head up and when he was touched, he yelped. Getting rid of the maggots was a priority.
The infected pup was given some Karo Syrup to try and perk him up and then the flushing of the maggots began. It was so disgusting to see how many were removed. Once the area was free of maggots there was no sign of a wound. Getting this guy to the vet was critical to make sure he didn't have anything else going on that could not be detected. Shelter Friends, Inc. was contacted to see if we could help with the vet bill. When the puppy was checked out at the veterinary clinic, it did turn out he had a wound. The area was shaved, flushed and he was put on antibiotics.
All three puppies are in foster care, hoping to be adopted soon. Updates on the three siblings can be found on the Shelter Friends, Inc. Facebook page.
